VM-verticalJackson, Miss.- SMG, managers of the Jackson Convention Complex (JCC), and world leader in venue management, is proud to welcome Volunteer Mississippi for the twentieth anniversary celebration of Americorps on September 12, 2014. This pledge ceremony is part of a nationwide, simultaneous swearing-in of AmeriCorps members taking place in every state on the same day.  President Obama will lead the nationwide ceremony and give remarks to AmeriCorps members at the White House. At 10:30 a.m., AmeriCorps members from coast to coast will take the AmeriCorps pledge, launching a new service year for 75,000 AmeriCorps members.

For twenty years, AmeriCorps members have supported the efforts of public agencies, schools and institutions of higher learning, and nonprofit, faith-based and community organizations to improve education outcomes, assist with recovery efforts, assist elderly and disabled Mississippians, and transform the face of their communities. During this twentieth commemorative year, twenty AmeriCorps alumni ambassadors will provide support for these new members and work with them to complete special service projects throughout the state. The types of service AmeriCorps members complete are as diverse as the members themselves. AmeriCorps State Program members will serve as reading tutors, prepare and distribute food to low-income seniors, rehabilitate houses for low-income citizens, provide life skills training to Mississippians with disabilities and connect military families and veterans to needed resources.

“On its 20th anniversary, AmeriCorps is poised to have an even greater impact. Every day, in communities across Mississippi, AmeriCorps members are getting things done to make our state stronger and better,” said Volunteer Mississippi Executive Director David Mallery. “We are proud of the extraordinary accomplishments of Mississippi’s AmeriCorps members over the past 20 years and are excited to welcome a new class as they embark on a new year of service.”

AmeriCorps members serve at more than 25,000 locations from coast to coast, strengthening education, providing disaster services, fostering economic opportunity, assisting veterans and military families, preserving the environment, and expanding health services.

“AmeriCorps members make a powerful impact on the toughest challenges facing our nation,” said Wendy Spencer, CEO of the Corporation for National Service, the federal agency that administers AmeriCorps.  “Building on Mississippi’s strong tradition of neighbor helping neighbor, AmeriCorps members have improved countless lives across Mississippi over the past 20 years.  AmeriCorps has become an indispensable solution for America’s communities.”
